Breast Augmentation Techniques

Breast augmentation mammoplasty, or placement of silicone implants in the breasts, is one of the most performed surgeries in the world. The vast majority of studies show that it is a procedure that achieves the highest patient satisfaction rate. The results of the procedure improved greatly, both due to the advancement of surgical techniques and the quality of the implants. Candidate patients for this procedure are generally those who have small breasts, with or without asymmetries, or those who have lost weight after pregnancy and have significant loss of breast volume.

Each patient has a particular type of body conformation that determines the type of implant that must be used, the surgical technique, and the access route in each case. The most used access routes are the axillary, submammary and periareolar. By any of these routes, the implants can be placed in the subglandular or submuscular plane. The result is already observed after surgery, and may undergo changes due to the inflammation that occurs, which is why the final appearance is observed after six months.

It is important to highlight that, in studies carried out in various hospital centers throughout the world, there is no conclusive evidence that links silicone breast implants as a causal factor of breast cancer. Therefore, its placement is considered a safe procedure. The Asia Syndrome continues to be a subject of analysis and study, and its presentation is in any case rare.  The surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation.
