Nose Surgery

Today there are more sophisticated techniques that were developed to adapt the shape of the nose to the individual characteristics of each patient’s face. The goal should always be facial harmony, since the nose is in the center of the face and represents an important aesthetic unit of the face. Nasal surgery can be performed from the age of 16 to 18, depending on the development of the facial structures and the alterations that must be treated. It is possible to reduce or increase the size of the nose, modify the shape of the tip and back, correct the consequences of trauma, improve breathing, reduce the size of the nostrils, improve the angle between the nose and the upper lip, and improve the shape of a previously operated nose. Here the goals of plastic surgery should always be to obtain an aesthetic and functional nose, that adapts to the face and racial origin of the patient.

Rhinoplasty can be performed by two techniques, the open technique and the closed technique. The so-called open technique makes access to the nose through two internal incisions and a small external incision placed in the narrowest portion of the columella (region between the tip of the nose and the upper lip), and leaves a scar that is well performed remains almost imperceptible. This access offers greater precision in the treatment of some more complex deformities of the nose that require a more complete view of the different structures. The closed technique makes internal incisions without the presence of visible scars. In many cases it is necessary to reinforce the nasal structure with the placement of cartilage grafts extracted from the patient himself. In these cases, cartilage from the ear or nasal septum can be used according to convenience.
